If you have decided on a specialized care option, you may be traveling to a major cancer center with a multidisciplinary team of doctors (surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists) who see mesothelioma patients on a regular basis. You may wish to ask the following questions when evaluating a treatment facility:
- Is the cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute as one of their premier facilities?
- Does the facility have a medical staff that is familiar with the treatment of mesothelioma?
- Does the facility offer a variety of treatment options for which you might be eligible?
- Has the facility been rated by state or consumer groups on its quality of care?
- Is medical care at the facility covered under your insurance plan, and if not, what resources might they be able to direct you to?
- Will they be able to coordinate your care with your local health care team?
- Does the facility fully explain the patient’s rights and responsibilities, and are copies of this information, called The Patient’s Bill of Rights, available on request?
Remember, you do have the right to choose where you are treated. Look at the pros and cons of local care versus specialized care, and understand that everyone makes different treatment choices. The key is having the information to work with, and then making the best decision for yourself and your family. |
